In the music making process, there’s the recording, the editing, the blending all the instruments and sounds, and sculpting the whole thing with tools - that last part is “mixing”.
A “rough mix” has the recording and usually the editing done, and a general balance of the sounds, with maybe a few shaping tools to get an idea of what the song is becoming.
